Ecorys investigates the regulation of transport of hydrogen for the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy

Hydrogen is expected to play a crucial role in the energy transition to achieve the climate targets of Paris. In order to assess the potential of hydrogen for the Netherlands and to indicate what needs to be done to realize this potential, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy is finalising a roadmap for hydrogen. One of the subjects that needs attention is the possible regulation of the transport of hydrogen. Hydrogen can be transported in the same way as natural gas and distributed through pipelines. The transport of natural gas is a regulated activity, with an independent network operator and regulated rates.

Commissioned by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy, Ecorys will investigate the advantages and disadvantages of the regulation of the transport of hydrogen. Ecorys executes the project together with TNO and will also speak to field experts as part of the research. The final version of the report is expected in April 2018.

Ecorys regularly works in the field of new sustainable technologies and the impact that these technologies can have on the energy system.
